Il Cinese Socks
He was a badass. Kooky. Hollow cheeked, narrow eyed (giving rise to his nickname 'il cinese') and as slim as cyclists come. Ironic and free as a bird.
Luigi Malabrocca defied the laws of physics, using the art of slowness to disappear into the thin air and finish last. Yep, you heard correct. He twice raced the Giro d’italia to win the Maglia Nera, the black jersey, awarded to the last man to finish. But he wasn’t a loser, au contraire, he just wanted to be the first among the 'lasts'.
The true champion is the one who distinguishes himself, only the first and the last stand out, while all others go forgotten. Barefaced Malabrocca was as sly as a fox and genius at maximising the time to arrive last without being banned from the race. He mastered the ability to hide himself in barns or moats, just to lose the perfect amount of time. We doff our caps to the star player that was able to race backward.
