Le Maillot Socks
There was Maurice Garin, a chimney sweep who became the first winner in 1903. When the Stages were for superheroes and the bikes as heavy as fences.
Then there was Federico Bahamontes, a wild outsider frightened to death by the descents who, according to legend, threw his bike down a ravine during the 1954 Tour de France rather than face the slope. In 1959 he took courage and won.
Then there was Marco Pantani and the Ventoux in 2000. 'The Pirate' took the lift to the gallows and started a merciless duel into the sun with Lance Armstrong, crossing glances, wheel to wheel, no pity, two titans facing each other with bated breath. Pantani won.
This is only a taste of the Grand Boucle, 21 Stage Challenge, the flash at the start, the runaway of the sprinters, the clap of the folk’s hands, the sweat of the grimpeurs, duels, suffering, pain. We love it.
